With its aim to promote awareness on the importance of taking care of the environment, the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) join forces in searching for sustainable and eco-friendly schools across the country.

As stated in a Deped Memorandum, the search aims to encourage schools/academic institutions to become more actively involved in environmental issues at a practical and local level.

Outstanding schools will be chosen based on their active involvement in raising conservation awareness among students, teachers and other school personnel as can be seen in their curriculum, school operations, policy, existence of eco organizations, eco partners and linkages, and socio-cultural sustainability.

Schools may adopt the following in pursuit of sustainable and eco-friendly schools: water conservation/water management; paper conservation/paper recycling; waste segregation; seedling production; establishment of botanical garden and the like.

Participating schools are required to submit the following documents in three sets: official contest entry form; supporting documents such as memoranda, circulars, photos of environmental programs of the school; publications and design work; and copies of certificate and merit awards for environment programs.

Deadline for submission of entries for elementary and secondary schools to DepEd Schools Division Offices (SDOs) is on or before April 10, 2015. For public and high school categories, entries should be submitted to their respective DepEd Division Offices. Private elementary, high school and college categories should be submitted to the nearest Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) regional office.

At the regional level, there will be a finalist per category. Each will be awarded a Certificate of Recognition and Php 15,000 prize. Regional finalists shall compete at the national level.

First prize winners in the national level for each of the three categories will receive Php 50,000; second prize winners, Php 40,000 each category; and third prize winners will take home Php 30,000.

All winning entries for each category, together with the selected entries, will be displayed during the national awarding ceremonies to be held on November 15, 2015, in time for the celebration of National Environmental Awareness Month.
