The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) has registered a decline of P84 million worth of properties destroyed in fire incidents in 2014 compared to that in 2013, a BFP official announced Monday.

Supt. Dominador Zabala, Jr., fire marshal of the BFP’s Zamboanga City Fire District (ZCFD), said some P108 million worth of properties were destroyed in 2014 fire incidents, which is lower by P84 million, compared to the P192 million in 2013.

Zabala said this came about after this city, which comprises of 98 barangays, has registered a decreased of 11 fire incidents from 110 in 2013 to 99 in 2014.

Zabala said one of the factors that contributed to the decrease of fire incidents in 2014 was public awareness brought about by the information and education campaign they conducted.

The campaign include fire safety seminars and fire drills that were conducted in schools and barangays.

However, Zabala said the number of fatalities in 2014 fire incidents has reached four, which is higher by two compared to the two deaths in 2013. There were 11 people injured in 2014 while 13 in 2013.

He appealed to the public to always check their electrical wirings, maintain cleanliness, and to keep highly flammable materials in safe place to help the BFP in fire prevention.

“We appeal to the public to help the BFP in fire prevention as it is a shared responsibility. We urged them to be fire safety conscious,” he added. — RGAAG
