Men of the Zamboanga City Public Safety Company under Supt. Ariel Huesca intercepted yesterday morning an alleged illegal shipment of cut bakawan (mangrove) trees and tan barks aboard a vessel anchored at a private wharf.

Huesca said his men led by St. Insp. Allan Perpetua rushed to Wee Bin wharf in Baliwasan around 9:30 a.m. after receiving a report that a vessel loaded with several cut old bakawan branches also known as “pagatpat” and tan batks was docked at the wharf.

During an ocular investigation, the crew of the vessel could not produce papers legalizing the shipment of the cut bakawan trees. The vessel crew presented documents only for the transport of the tan barks.

Huesca who later arrived at the wharf identified the name of the vessel as ML Princess Marimar.

The seized undocumented cut bakawan trees were formally turned over to the DENR and was received by Mr. Mohammadbo Sirajani and Mr. Omar Ahamad.

The vessel crew members were brought to the Police Station 11 for questioning. —  Dan Toribio
