An 81-year-old man was shot to death by a Navy enlisted man inside the latter’s residential compound at Montilla Drive, Guiwan at dawn yesterday.

Killed was Arcadio Corcilles y Baldazo, married, a native of Leyte. He was shot by SN1 Mark Joseph Saavedra y Luna.    Saavedra told the police that he and other members of the family were sleeping when he heard their dogs barking.

Saavedra said he stood up to check  and saw an unidentified man inside their compound.

Saavedra fired his .45 caliber pistol on the man hitting the latter on the chest.

The man was later identified as Corcilles.

Corcilles’ relatives told DZT that the victim along with his two grandchildren had just arrived from Leyte via Rural Transit bus aboard a RORO boat and were heading for Ayala to visit relatives.

Corcilles’ companions were a grandson aged 10 and a granddaughter aged 9. They arrived at Guiwan Bus Terminal at dawn and the 81-year-old man felt thirsty which prompted him to look for a house to ask for water but he was shot by Saavedra who was residing near the bus terminal.

Saavedra surrendered to the police after the incident.

Police recovered from the crime scene three spent shells of .45 caliber pistol and a 19-inch long bolo.

Saavedra claimed that Corcilles was armed with a bolo when he entered their compound but the grandson denied it saying they had just arrived at the bus terminal and his grandfather was not carrying any weapon.

Saavedra also surrendered his pistol to the police.

Meanwhile, Divisoria Police Commander Chief Insp. Mark Azure said they will recommend the filing of a homicide case against the Navy man. —  Dan Toribio
