The police foiled a bombing attempt Friday night in the town of Jolo, the capital of Sulu, a top official announced yesterday.
The bombing attempt was prevented after Jolo Police            Station commander Insp. Francisco Panisan received a text message from a concerned resident that a suspicious black backpack was left by five unidentified motorcycle-riding persons near a store in Barangay Asturias, Jolo town.

Director Felicisimo Khu, Directorate for Integrated Police Operations (DIPO)-West, said the backpack was abandoned near the sari-sari store of Police Officer 3 Maning Sappal.

Khu said responding Explosive Ordnance Demolition (EOD) policemen rushed to Barangay Asturias and cordoned the area and conducted disruption procedure after they determined the backpack contained an improvised bomb.

Khu said the EOD policemen successfully disrupted the improvised bomb. They recovered two 81-millimeter mortar shells with a timing device, battery, four blasting caps, electrical clamp, and wiring, Khu said.

He said the recovered improvised parts were “very much” similar to the bomb recovered last June 1 in Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat.
He said they are conducting thorough investigation to determine who left the improvised bomb.
