The Zamboanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation Inc. (ZCCIFI) said yesterday it welcomes the setting up of a 100-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Zamboanga City to supply part or all of Zamcelco’s power requirement, but called for transparency in the deal between the cooperative and the independent power producer (Conal Holdings).

In a press statement, ZCCFI President Pocholo Soliven called on Conal Holdings to explained why the proposed coal plant project is way above the cost of Panay Coal Plant.

Soliven said the Conal Holding price for Zamboanga City is $2.79 million per MW while Panay Coal Plant only cost in the vicinity of $1.5-1.6 million.
The ZCCFI held a special board meeting the other dayto tackle the issue of the proposed 100 MW coal-fired power plant to be set up at the Zamboanga City Ecozone.
“The ZCCIFI (Zamboanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation Inc.)   welcomes the setting up of a coal fired powered plant in Zamboanga City ..... The looming power crisis in Mindanao calls for a pro-active move to study alternative power sources which is affordable and clean energy...The embedding of the plant within within the franchise area of Zamcelco gives the benefit of bypassing the transmission grid of NGCP, the saivings of which estimated to be 1.00 per KWHR will redound to the electric consumers of Zamboanga City,” said the ZCCIFI press statement..

Soliven said it is expected that this plant will employ latest power generation technology which will conform to the environment laws of the country.
Soliven said ZCCIFI encourages and will support the setting up of power plants here whose invesment and costing will be aligned with comparable recently commissioned coal fired power plant.

He called for transparency on the memorandum of agreement between Zamcelco and Conal Holdings.
