The 2015 National Search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools is set. As an overwhelming response to last 2013 search, the DENR through the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), in cooperation with the Department of Education (DepEd), Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and Private Sectors join hand-in-hand to promote the most sustainable and environment-friendly schools in the country.

The said search is open to all public and private schools at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels. Deadline for the submission of entries is on April 10, 2015 to give ample time to schools to enhance their eco-friendly programs.

Republic Act. No 9512 also known as the National Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008 - aims to spur school’s involvement in environmental issues at the practical and local levels. According to the guidelines, “sustainable and eco-friendly” schools are those that initiate and integrate in their instruction, research or administration environment-related programs.

DENR EMB Director Jonas Leones said the competition seeks to encourage schools to become more actively involved in environmental issues at the local level. It also recognizes academic institutions with the best eco-friendly programs and activities.

The greenest schools in the elementary, high school and tertiary levels will each receive P50,000. Second and third-place winners in every category will each receive P40,000 and P30,000 respectively.

Aside from the above-mentioned prizes, a special Nestle Water Leadership Award will be given on schools that promote solutions, practices and initiatives to conserve water, and another Energy Leadership Award from MERALCO will be given in recognition of the schools’ electrical safety and energy efficiency programs. Both awards will grant recipients P20,000 each.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro encouraged all schools to take part in the nationwide search which will coincide with the celebration of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Environment Year, with the theme “Empowering the Youth into a Clean and Green Asean”. He said that the search aims to develop skills and understanding among students, faculty and school administrators in initiating active responses and increasing community awareness and participation in environmental concerns.

Entries for elementary and high school categories should be submitted directly to their respective DepEd Schools Division Offices (SDOs) on or before April 10, 2015. Selected entries from the elementary and secondary schools should be submitted by the SDOs to EMB Regional Office on June 01, 2015.

All winning entries for each category, together with the selected entries, will be displayed during the national awarding ceremonies to be held on November 15, 2015 in time for the celebration of National Environment Awareness Month.
