The national government, through the Department of Justice, is set to make an appeal for the transfer of ASG members detained in the Zamboanga City to Manila.

According to Mayor Beng Climaco, President Noynoy Aquino has directed Justice Secretary Leila de Lima to oversee the appeal process which will facilitate the transfer of the more or less 56 ASG members detained at the City Reformatory Center to Manila due to the security risk they pose to the City.

“Expectao si Sec. Leila de Lima el ase disuyu apelo na Korte Suprema y tambien na korte para intensifica el transferida del maga Abu Sayyaf,” said the chief executive.

Aside from the security briefings relative the explosion in Guiwan last Friday, the President’s visit Sunday, January 25, also included a visit to the City Jail to confer with local officials regarding the presence of high profile detainees.

In a separate meeting with multi-sectoral groups, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas discussed security concerns and the efforts of the President to help facilitate the requested transfer.

Following a foiled attempt to spring out ASG detainees at the Reformatory Center, Mayor Climaco immediately lodged her request for the transfer of high profile inmates to a more secure site in Manila to both Secretary De Lima and Roxas to minimize security risks.

Local authorities believe that the recent explosion incident last Friday is connected to the detained ASG members and may have been a retaliatory attack after the foiled breakout attempt. — Jasmine Mohammadsali
