The city government through the Investment Promotion Services Division of the City Mayor’s Office announced yesterday that it will conduct a Grand Market Sale dubbed “Grandioso Venta del Mercado” at Plaza Pershing from Feb. 19 to 26.

The eight-day activity is one of this year’s “Dia de Zamboanga” highlights, celebrating the city’s charter anniversary on Feb. 26, the day in 1937 when the first set of city officials with Nicasio Valderrosa as mayor was formally installed and inaugurated, barely four months after then President Manuel L. Quezon signed into law the City Charter of Zamboanga on Oct. 12, 1936.

Angelique Go, chief of the city’s Investment Promotion Division, said the Grand Market Sale is primarily aimed at reaching out to the city’s 98 barangays and look for products that will be showcased during the “City of Charm” activity in September with business delegates from China coming over.

She said the “Grandioso Venta del Mercado” will transform the historic Plaza Pershing into a market place by day where a wide array of agri-fishery products like fruits, vegetables and novelty items including native delicacies will be on sale.

By night, the plaza cum market will offer dining and drinking with matching musical entertainment by local bands and performers, film viewings and many more. Thus, Plaza Pershing will be a place where everybody can see, buy, eat, drink and enjoy whatever products, foods and drinks on display.

The market sale is open to all businessmen, selected barangay products, micro-small- and medium entrepreneurs.

Other partners of the event are the Office of the City Agriculturist, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Zamboanga City Office, Barangay Affairs Division, Liga ng mga Barangay, City General Services Office, Public Information Division, the Zamboanga City Police Office and Task Force Zamboanga. — Vic Larato
