Another bomb attack possibly by the Abu Sayyaf was foiled yesterday in Isabela City, Basilan.

A police report disclosed that a suspicious tin can in a plastic bag. was spotted 6:45 a.m. at the Island Petroleum Corporati0n depot in Barangay Tabuk, Isabela City.

A utility worker of the said depot discovered the suspicious plastic bag suspected to have be thrown from the outside.     Around 8 a.m. the depot management was informed of the said plastic bag and upon verification by responding K9 sniff dog unit of the Army’s Special Forces, the bag was positive for explosive. A water disruptor was used to disarm the suspected IED.    Recovered during the process were one non-electric blasting cap, a time fuse, a tin can as container and possible 1 kg of ANFO explosive.

A post blast investigation was conducted at the blast site and revealed that the bomber lighted a match stick but failed to come into contact with the time fuse for ignition of the detonator. — Richard Falcatan
