The six-minute video on the Mamasapano incident that has gone viral is authentic, as attested by the chief of the 5th Special Action Battalion (SAB)-Special Action Force of the Philippine National Police, according to District I Cong. Celso Lobregat.

Lobregat, who is a member of the House Committee on Public Order and Safety and vice chairman of the House Committee on Peace and Reconciliation—the bodies that are spearheading the Congressional hearing on the    Mamasapano incident, initially on Wednesday morning suggested the showing of the video but later opted to shelve the idea and instead to ask for a confirmation from the 5th SAB-SAF chief PSI Reynald Ariño.

Ariño was permitted by the investigating committee to speak and to confirm the identity of a SAF-commando brutally killed in the video, apparently taken by the killer.

Lobregat who actively took part in the hearings said the truth should be known and that the 44 PNP-SAF who were killed in the January 25 incident should be given the justice they deserve.

As congress started its investigation on the incident Wednesday, the Senate is also conducting its own investigation and ended its second day of the probe yesterday, Thursday. Congress will resume investigation on Feb. 17.

Lobregat said it is important that the different agencies conduct their own investigation on the incident. The House and the Senate need to conduct the probe it is studying the BBL; the Department of Justice will prosecute the case and the other agencies also have their own purpose in undertaking the probe.

“But it is very clear now that it was not a misencounter”, the District I congressman said.

Meanwhile, he urged Zamboanguenos to closely monitor the inquiries done in the Senate and in the House so they can also have answers to their own questions.

“It’s a painful process but if we want the truth to come out we should go through this painful process”, he added. — Jubels Santos
