Spanish Ambassador Luis Antonio Calvo will grace the celebration of the city’s 78th Charter Anniversary or Dia de la Ciudad de Zamboanga on February 26 marking the installation of the first set of city officials in 1937.

Paul Mason of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will be the city’s guest during the Awards Night for the Zamboanga Film Festival and Local Achievers set on February 25.

February 26 has been declared a special non-working day in Zamboanga pursuant to Presidential Proclamation 970 to allow residents to fittingly commemorate the Dia de Zamboanga.

The city government has lined up activities for the Charter Day celebration that started February 19 with the opening of the Grandioso Venta del Mercado or grand market sale, an agri-trade fair with nightly entertainment at Plaza del Pilar. It will run until Feb. 26.

Today, Feb. 23-25 will be the Zamboanga Film Festival at the Cinematheque in Leure animation and live action films. The screening schedules are 10am, 12nn, 2pm and 4pm.

Awards night for the filmfest will be simultaneous with the conferment of awards for the 2015 Local Achievers set at 7pm at the Centro Latino in Paseo del Mar.

The activities on February 26 will kick off with the grand civic military parade from Ledesma Street to Paseo del Mar where the commemorative program will be held.

Post Dia de Zamboanga activities include the Kasalang Bayan, a wedding ceremony involving unmarried couples who are employees of the city government, to be solemnized by Mayor Beng Climaco. It will be held at the City Hall lobby.

Along with the social activities, the City Government through the City Sports Division has also scheduled various sports tournaments that will run from February to March.

Events organized by private groups and organizations are also part of the Dia de Zamboanga calendar of activities and this include the Couple Run 2k15 of the Ateneo de Zamboanga Feb. 15, Nadia: Un Musical Chavacano Feb. 19-21 at the ADZU Brebeuf gym; WMSU Alumni Fun Run (Feb. 22), Paolo Onesa- the Thanksgiving concert (Feb. 25 WMSU Gym), Women’s Conference on Participation in Governance (Feb. 24- Centro Latino), Rotarun Year 4 (Feb. 25- Jardin Maria Clara), CSO summit (Feb. 25 ADZU) and 18th Celso Lobregat Cup Open Dart Tournament (Feb. 27-28 – Ram’s beer garden and Restaurant). — Sheila Covarrubias
