Zamboanga residents today celebrate a triumphant milestone marking the day when the first set of appointed officials of the city were formally installed into office 78 years ago.

Spanish Ambassador Luis Antonio Calvo will be the City’s honoured guest during a commemorative program that will be preceded by a grand civic military parade from Ledesma Street to Paseo del Mar.

Ambassador Calvo is arriving in the city this morning afterwhich he will call on Mayor Beng Climaco in City Hall at 2pm.

As in the past, the visit of the Spanish Ambassador to Zamboanga City renews a long history of friendship and ties with Zamboangueños that began with the laying of the cornerstone of Fort Pilar in 1635.

The 78th Dia de Zamboanga celebration kicked off with the Grandioso Venta de Mercado or grand market sale at the Plaza del Pilar from Feb. 19-26; Zamboanga Film Festival from Feb. 23-25; Drum and Lyre and Cheer Dance competitions Feb. 24 and the Awards Night for the 2015 Local Achievers and Zambo Film Fest winners.

The grand highlight is today with the grand civic military parade at 3pm and the main program at 4pm.

The Kasalang Bayan will be held tomorrow, Feb. 27 at the Centro Latino at 1:30pm.

Private groups and other organizations have also initiated activities and are part of the Dia de Zamboanga calendar.

Malacañang has declared Feb. 26 as a special non-working day in Zamboanga to allow residents to fittingly celebrate the Dia de Zamboanga. — Sheila Covarrubias
