Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Gov. Mujiv Hataman condemned the murder of Regional Reconciliation and Unification Commission Executive Director Norodin Manalao Thursday night.

Manalao was shot several  times by a gunman around 6 pm in Cotabato City. Authorities are still investigating the murder and all angles are being closely looked into. Initial reports showed that he sustained at least 11 gunshot wounds.

“We grieve over the murder of Director Norodin Manalao and condemn in the highest possible term this heinous and cowardly act that demonstrates brutality and utter lack of regard for the value of human life.”

Hataman described Manalao as one of the regional government’s “peace assets.” His office has been involved in efforts to end long-standing feuds between families or rido in the region.

“We see a peace worker being killed senselessly,” Hataman said. “It is concerning that despite his work to end strings of bloodshed that gripped some clans in the region for so many years, he himself became a victim of violence. This death is unacceptable and extremely tragic.”

Last year, Manalao’s office was able to settle around 300 clan wars, many of which in Maguindanao. Many of these clan wars have extended up to over two decades.

Manalao regarded rido — which stemmed from political rivalry, land conflicts and territorial disputes — as one of the factors that hampers the development of ARMM.

Hataman has ordered the ARMM PNP to investigate and ensure the expeditious delivery of justice.
