A militiaman, suspected to have been stricken with malaria, ran amok and killed five of his colleagues in Barangay Palid, Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay last Sunday night.

A police report disclosed that the five militiamen were watching television inside a Civilian Armed Auxiliary detachment when Olegario Vocal Jr.  grabbed an M14 rifle, loaded it with one magazine and then opened fire on them at close range.

The fatalities were identified as Nilo Rudas, Narcisco Rudas, Ike Hario, Edgar Sibelo and Salvador Beleno.

Police said the victims sustained bullet wounds in the head and body and died on the spot.

Vocal left the place bringing the rifle and went into hiding in the hinterland of Zamboanga Sibugay. He was killed yesterday in a gunbattle with an army and militia team who went on a manhunt operation against him.

People who know Vocal said he was suffering from malaria but this was not confirmed by authorities.

The incident happened two days after another amok, an ex-convict stormed the Talisayan Elementary School in this city and attacked everybody on sight killing a Grade 5 pupil, a teacher and 64-year-old man and wounded six others.

The amok in Talisayan, Felin Mateo, who was a convicted rapist was lynched by an angry mob who stoned and punched him to death.
