Days after the main commemoration of the city’s 78th charter anniversary, the celebration still continues as the city government and its partners hold various activities.

A total of 68 participants, seven of whom came from other parts of the peninsula and one from Pasay City, vied for top honors at the two-day Juego na Dia de Zamboanga Open and Kiddies Chess Championship held over the weekend.

Councilor Roel Natividad and Dipolog City Vice Mayor and head of contingent Edilburgo Cheng made the ceremonial moves to open the tournament. Notably, Cheng provided the chess equipment (chess clocks and chess sets) used during the competition.

Abdulhan Agga dominated the Open Division, winning bragging rights and P5,000 plus trophy, while Raymond Salcedo clinched second (P3,000 + trophy) and Abdulkalip Daggung placed third (P2,000 + trophy).

In the Kiddies Division, Aeronne Baling bagged first place along with the P3,000 cash prize and trophy. Second placer Mohammad Ilias Lucman and third placer Abbie Aison Nabua also received cash prizes (P2,000 and P1,000, respectively) and a trophy.

Fourth through tenth placers in the Open Division received P1,000 in consolation prize while their counterparts in the Kiddies Division took home P500.

Special prizes were also awarded to Reynaldo Gonzales (Top Senior Player), Arjean Jumlai (Top Junior Player), Angelyn Sanchez (Top Lady Player) and Art Noblijas (Youngest Player Award). Gonzales, Jumlai and Sanchez each received P1,000 in cash and a trophy while Noblijas received P100 and a medal.

The Juego na Dia de Zamboanga Open and Kiddies Chess Championship was spearheaded by the City Government of Zamboanga through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor’s Office in partnership with the Zamboanga Hermosa Chess Club. — Claudine Uniana
