Mayor Beng Climaco expressed regrets for the loss of two other Zamboanga siege heroes during an ambush believed to have been perpetrated by Abu Sayyaf guerrillas in Patikul, Sulu recently.

“We extend our deepest sympathies and condolence to the bereaved families, relatives and friends. The City Government will extend assistance to the families and will coordinate with the military for this purpose,” the mayor said.

1Lt. Ferman James Magbanua and 1Lt. Emerson Somera of the Alpha Company of the Philippine Army were among those killed in action during the Patikul, Sulu incident.

Magbanua and Somera were both part of the Army contingent that helped and defended the City of Zamboanga from the attackers during the September 2013 siege.

At the height of the siege, Magbanua was among the soldiers who secured the Zamboanga City Medical Center, while Somera was one of the troopers assigned at the Hall of Justice in Sta. Barbara.

Mayor Climaco said both Magbanua and Somera, just like the PNP-Special Action Force (SAF) commandos killed in the Mamasapano incident last January 25, “risked their lives in defense of Zamboanga, and forever we will remember them as our heroes”.

Magbanua and Somera were killed along with 5 Abu Sayyaf members in the clash in barangay Tanum in Patikul, Sulu, Feb. 25. Twelve other soldiers and 14 ASG members were also wounded in the clash, according to reports. — Sheila Covarrubias
