People living along the coast of sitio Tinago at the end of Pioneer Avenue, the main thoroughfare of  General Santos City, have started evacuating because mysterious soil erosion threatens their houses.

According to the residents of Tinago and Tuna Park area, the sea water off the coast of Tinago seems like on an abnormal situation. At the bottom of the shallow water is a round hole measuring about 50 meters, which at first described as sink hole. However experts said it was soil erosion.

The sea water on the hole is very noticeable because it has no wave activities.

People in the area revealed that a diver used an oxygen tank to investigate the phenomenon at the round hole. However, he was not able to fathom the depth of the hole even as the oxygen tank he was using was almost empty.  .   They said when the diver emerged from the sea, his ears and nose were bleeding and he was in pain.

A transport vessel M/ V Frederick from Balut island attempted to docked at the finger wharf in the area at the vicinity of the hole, but the anchor dropped into the sea could not seek the ground level. The posts of houses also hang at the coastal area. It is no longer connected to the ground of the sea due to the soil erosion.

Gensan Mayor Ronnel C. Rivera said he has already directed the City  Risk Disaster and Management Office to relocate the residents to Barangay Mabuhay and Uhaw.

“Just in case ma-collapse ang coastal area sa Tinago, people have already a relocation site. I’m waiting for the result of the iinvestigation of a sea expert,“ Rivera said. —  Allen Abastillas
