Thousands of women representing the different sectors in the city will converge at the Paseo del Mar today, March 9, for the celebration of Dia de las Mujeres or Women’s day, a global celebration of the contributions and achievements of women in their field of endeavor.

Mayor Beng Climaco, who championed women’s rights and welfare through her sponsorship of the Magna Carta of Women in Congress and other pro-women programs and projects, will lead the different activities together with the Gender and Development (GAD) led by Councilor Myra Paz Abubakar and the Local Council of Women (LCW) chaired by Dr. Mila Fernandez.

The program at the Paseo del Mar will be preceded by a march dubbed “Baile de las Mujeres” that will kick off at Ledesma Street in front of the Bureau of Fire Station towards the Paseo.

After the program at the Paseo, women will have the opportunity to avail of free breast examination and pap smear at the Centro Latino lobby.  Products of different Rural Improvement Clubs (RICS) will also be put on display for sale in booths that will be set up in the Paseo grounds.

The Dia de las Mujeres  or the International Women’s Day is originally set on March 8 but being a Sunday, the City Government decided to observe it today, March 9. It will also kick off different activities for the whole month of March, dubbed as Women’s month.

The activity is a fund-raising campaign with proceeds intended for the psychiatric ward at ZCMC, women inmates of BJMP and women crisis center.

Meanwhile, pursuant to Executive Order 102-2015 issued by the mayor, some sections of Mayor Jaldon Street, from its junction with Mayor Ledesma Street, Mayor Climaco Avenue fronting the Bureau of Fire Protection and Valderrosa Street up to Paseo del Mar, will be temporarily closed to traffic from 6am-9am on Monday, March 9, 2015.

In celebration of Dia de las Mujeres or Women’s Day today, March 9, some streets particularly those included in the route for the “Baile de las Mujeres” will be temporarily closed to traffic and motorcycle parking and where carrying of backpacks will be prohibited from 6am-9am.

In the same order, parking of motorcycles and bringing of backpack at Valderrosa street up to Paseo del Mar will also be prohibited from 6am-9am today as part of the security measures and to facilitate the conduct of the march. - Sheila Covarrubias
