Due to extreme weather condition, farmers are advised to stop slash and burn and grass fire activities as these may cause damage to lives and properties.

City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office in-charge Elmeir Apolinario issued the call in the light of mounting reports of grass or bush fires in various parts of the city recently.

In a meeting convened by the CDRRMO last Friday, both the Zamboanga City Water District and the City Agriculturist Office have expressed alarm over the increasing cases of grass or bush fires as well as slash and burn activities that damaged several hectares of grass lands and even crops.

In a visit to barangays Manicahan and Lamisahan early last week, City agriculturist Diosdado Palacat said several bush fire incidents were reported in mountainous and grassy areas of the barangays due to slash and burn farming or outdoor burning causing damage to agricultural areas.

Apolinario said the people should be told of the dangers of slash and burn activities, grass fires or outdoor burning especially at this time when the city is experiencing extreme weather conditions.

Grass fires could spread rapidly endangering lives and properties, he added. — Sheila Covarrubias
