After thorough preparations and compliance with requirements, the evacuation center at the Zamboanga East-West Central School (ZEWCS) was ordered closed effective Saturday, March 21.

Mayor Beng Climaco said the families were transferred to the PTSI transitory site in Upper Calarian while 2 families opted to avail of the rent a home package.

The transfer of internally displaced persons (IDPs) from the evacuation centers to include grandstand is an ongoing process, as the city moves towards early recovery phase.

With the closure of the ZEWCS, only the grandstand remains as the evacuation center housing families displaced by the 2013 siege. The grandstand houses 974 families with 5,637 dependents as of March 16.

There are 9 transitory sites operating and these are located in Tulungatung, Taluksangay, Rio Hondo, PTSI in Upper Calarian, Mampang I, II and II, Silsillah Dalogue Movement Property in Paniran , Buggoc in Kasanyangan and grandstand bunkhouses.

It is the instruction of President Noynoy Aquino for the local government as well as the national agencies to effect the transfer of affected families from evacuation centers to temporary shelters and consequently to their permanent houses.

Mayor Climaco thanked the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), the humanitarian organizations and the Camp Coordination and Camp Management Cluster (CCCM) for ensuring the orderly and smooth transfer of the IDPs to transitory sites.

Prior to transfer, the CCM conducts social preparations and initiates look-see visits where IDPs are brought to the target transitory sites for them to see the area and to have a feel of the environment. — Sheila Covarrubias
