The United States Assistance for International Development’s (USAID’s) Enhancing Governance, Accountability and Engagement (ENGAGE), in partnership with the City Government of Zamboanga through the Public Information Office, has announced the 2nd Peace Journalism Training and Internship program on May 7 to June 5, 2015.

Municipal and Community Engagement Officer Jules Benitez of USAID-ENGAGE said the project will include a three-day intensive training on peace journalism and a 20-day internship in local media establishments.

He said the project intends to build the capacities of the selected youth for peace building through the mass media.

“This is in cognizance of the print media and the media establishments’ in general as potential mechanism for promoting peace,” Benitez said.

Expected participants are 18 campus journalists who demonstrate strong communication skills from universities and colleges in Zamboanga, which offer Mass Communication Program. The training is scheduled on May 7-9, while the internship program will start on May 11.

The first of such activity was conducted in 2014 with 14 communication students from Ateneo de Zamboanga University and Western Mindanao State University participating.

“The positive result of last year’s activity reinforces us to continuously support the program this year,” Benitez said.— Vic Larato
