Farmers of Barangay Baluan in General Santos City were happy harvesting their golden rice last week.

Reynaldo “Nonoy” Vito, a tenant farmer in the barangay was likewise elated because he is harvesting his full grown golden rice.

“Maligaya po ako dahil makakaharvest na ako at may pang gastos na po ako sa pag enroll nang aking anak sa school opening,” Vito said.

He said the National Irrigation Adminsitration (NIA) has directed farmers to plant rice only two times ayear but  farmers tried to do their luck by planting the third time because of the supply of irrigated water from NIA.

The farmers expressed gratitude to the  government for providing them free seeds and fertilizers.

“Ang libre na seeds at abono ay binibigay sa aming farmers association at doon po naming kukunin sa association,” Vito added.

Vito also thanked the Zamboanga Peninsula Urban Poor Aliance for allocating him a home with his three in laws.  He explained that he is 47 years old, a tenant farmer with no home lot.

He also thanked ZAMPEN because they bought a portion of the land of his landowner for urban poor housing.     His family is very fortunate because they were given a  priority to avail of the home lot as they are the tenants  of the landowner. —  Allen Abastillas
