Ipil gunbattle sparks fire; 1 soldier killed PDF Print E-mail

An army soldier was killed while a police car and several houses were razed by fire that broke out during an encounter between government forces and suspected armed motorcycle thieves in Barangay Tenan, Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay Saturday afternoon.

A police report disclosed that men of the Ipil Municipal Police Station swooped down on a vulcanizing shop around 1:30 p.m. after receiving a report that a stolen motorcycle was seen there. However when they arrived in the area, they were met by gunfire which prompted them to return fire.

Other police units and soldiers from the army’s 44th Infantry Battalion reinforced the Ipil policemen.

A certain Sgt. Ablao was killed in the shootout.

It was gathered that the suspects burned several houses while fleeing from the scene. A Toyora Hi Lux of the police was also razed by the fire.

Police said there were several casualties among the suspects, but authorities have no exact figure on the dead and wouinded.

The fire was contained around 4:30 p.m. with some P100,000 estimated damage..

Police recovered chop-chop or dismantled stolen motorcycles, 25 spent shells and 2 live ammos of caliber 5.56, 6 fired cartridges and a deformed slug of caliber 45 pistol, one container cap, one rubber cap, and one paper wrapper of rifle grenade.

Further investigation disclosed that the Toyota Hilux patrol car was hit by bullets from high powered firearms, rifle grenade, and molotov bomb that triggered the fire. – Dan Toribio Jr.
