It’s all systems go for the Department of Trade and Industry-9’s first-ever Mobile Diskwento Caravan targeting some of the region’s depressed areas from May 11-17.
DTI-9 Regional Director Dr. Sitti Amina M. Jain said the Mobile Diskwento was conceptualized with the poor as the ultimate consideration.
“The major objective is really to reach out to the rural municipalities for them to have easier access to basic commodities at discounted prices. We will be roaming around depressed areas in the region identified by our provincial offices”, Dir. Jain said.
The activity will kick-off in the city’s coastal barangay of Labuan on May 11; after which, the team will go to Titay in Zamboanga Sibugay on May 13; the group will then move to Siayan in Zamboanga del Norte of the 15th; then finally to Sominot, Zamboanga del Sur on the 17th.
As in all the diskwento caravans of the agency, discounts start at 10% Dir. Jain added.
Items that will be sold during the caravan include basic and prime commodities like noodles, canned sardines milk among others, and school supplies just in time for the opening of classes.
At least 10 establishments here in Zamboanga City have committed to participate in the mobile diskwento caravan by consigning their products with DTI as it would be expensive on their part to travel for one week.
“The difference between the mobile diskwento caravan from the regular one is that the distributors will not be joining the DTI staff in going to the provinces. Instead, they will be consigning their products to the Department of Trade and Industry”, Jain explained.
DTI has already come up with the mechanics, necessary papers, and policies to ensure that all items consigned by the distributors are properly documented.
Aside from these, DTI is partnering with other partner agencies for agricultural products and services.
“We are tying up with some partner agencies like Department of Agriculture for rice and other agricultural products like vegetables; TESDA for some services that can be provided during the caravan; and as well as our close coordination with the local government units”, Jain said.
Meanwhile, DTI Provincial Offices in the region are also scheduled to conduct the Balik Eskwela  Diskwento Caravan before the opening of classes right after the Mobile Diskwento Caravan.
The Diskwento Caravan was institutionalized as one of DTI’s nationwide banner programs in 2013. Aside from the Balik Eskwela Diskwento Fair, DTI also regularly conducts the Ramadan Diskwento Fair and the Noche Buena Diskwento Fair. However, DTI can also conduct the same during special activities in the provinces as deemed necessary.
