More than 30 houses were gutted down by fire, leaving some 200 people homeless in San Roque Monday night.

City Fire Marshal Sr. Supt. Dominador Zabala Jr. said the fire broke out at Feliciano drive around 6:30 p.m.

It was gathered that the fire started at the two-storey house of Teresita Bernardo and scattered to neighboring houses.

Occupants of the affected houses managed to get out before flames grew thick and threatened their lives.

Bernardo admitted that it was a member of their family who lighted a kerosene lamp at the second floor of their house during a blackout.

However, Bernardo said that few minutes later they noticed that there were cats engaging in love making and accidentally bumped the lamp that fell on the floor triggering the fire.

Bernardo said they were able to dragged their old and weak mother out of their burning house as the flames were building up.

Bernardo added that their television set which she saved from their burning house was stolen by some residents.

Affected residents were temporarily brought to the San Roque covered court while barangay officials led by Chairman Joselito Macrohon and personnel from the CSWD immediately assisted the victims. — Dan Toribio
