Mayor Beng Climaco yesterday lauded the unrelenting efforts of anti-drugs operatives that led to the arrest of the alleged Zamboanga City ‘drug queen’ and two of her cohorts in a buy bust operation in Candido Street, Tetuan Tuesday afternoon.

Climaco said the continuous anti-drugs operations launched by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), the Zamboanga City Police Office and other law enforcement units are proofs that the government is steadfast in its advocacy on security and public safety despite the numerous challenges. All these efforts, she stressed are aimed to ensure a better future for the children.

PDEA-9 Regional Director Joseph Ladip said Nurhana Musa Lao, also known as Benida Lao and dubbed as the Zamboanga City “drug queen”, 54, of Candido St. Tetuan was nabbed when she and her two relatives attempted to sell 2 plastic sachets containing white crystalline substance suspected to be shabu for P100,000 to a poseur buyer, who was a PDEA agent.

Lao’s arrest came after almost two years of thorough case build-up, intelligence operations and joint efforts with law enforcement units.

Pedemar Lao Usman, 38, also of Tetuan and Maureen Isabelo Taraji, 18 of Recodo – all Lao’s relatives, were also captured.

Seized during the operation included a wallet containing Usman’s postal and Philhealth identification cards, a City Jail visitor’s pass owned by Taraji, a Samsung cellular phone and 5 pieces of P500 bills used as show money. Estimated total weight of methamphetamine hydrochloride is 100 grams with a market value of P100,000.

The suspects will be charged for violation of Section 5 in relation to Sec. 26, Article II of Republic Act 9165 otherwise known as Dangerous Drugs Act. — Sheila Covarrubias
