Local businesses and industries showcased their best products and wares for a trade exposition at Centro Latino yesterday morning, May 7.

Acting Mayor Cesar Iturralde led the opening ceremonies for the two-day trade fair, dubbed Chinese-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) Promotional Conference and Trade Fair, which was organized by the City Government through the Investment and Promotions Division and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in preparation for the City’s participation as the City of Charm in the global 12th CAEXPO summit in China in September this year.

“That we have been among the chosen to showcase our products on a massive global trade exposition is a testament to the resilient enterprising spirit that continues to drive our business and trade industries and not to mention, the superior quality of our products and the skills of our people,” he said.

Set as a dry-run for the actual exhibit, the promotional conference was organized to help choose the final products which will be exhibited in China. According to DTI Zamboanga City Provincial Director and CAEXPO Ad-hoc Committee Chair Engr. Rolando Acuña, a Chinese delegation representing the CAEXPO secretariat will be in the City to evaluate the featured products at Centro Latino.

“We know that we have a potential of products that we can send to China and elsewhere in the globe,” Acuña said.

Some of the City’s top products to China, added Acuña, are dry seaweeds, frozen cuttlefish, and rubber.

Aside from exhibiting local products and trade, the promotional conference will also feature a CAEXPO roadshow with the Zamboanga ECOZONE as well as different training and workshops to capacitate local producers in packaging, product development, and pricing.

All products at the exhibit, which include local delicacies, textiles, food products, and crafts, are open to the public for viewing and purchase from May 7 to 8, from 9 am to 8 pm at Centro Latino.

During the opening ceremonies were City Councilor and Chair on Trade and Investment BG Guingona, city department heads, and representatives from the Mindanao Development Authority.

The CAEXPO is an international trade event co-sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce of China and its counterparts in 10 ASEAN countries as well as the ASEAN Secretariat. It will include business-matching sessions where local entrepreneurs will be matched up with possible buyers from not only China but also ASEAN member countries as well as South Korea. — Jasmine Mohammadsali
