The City Government augments its workforce today with the hiring of 1,308 high school students under the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES), a 20-day program jointly undertaken by the local government unit and the Department of Labor and Employment.

The 1,308 students compose the second batch of SPES beneficiaries whose contract of work with the City Government starts today, May 11 until June 2. Their entry follows the termination of the contract of the 1,362 college students under the 1st batch and worked from April 10-May 8.

The new City Government employees will undergo the required orientation today starting at 8am at the City Coliseum in Tetuan where they will be officially sworn into office by Mayor Beng Climaco.

The orientation will include briefing the students on their duties and responsibilities as City Government employees, program expectations, office assignments and other vital information. The speakers will include Mayor Climaco, DOLE-9 director Sisinio Cano, DOLE- City Director Wesley Tan, Social Welfare officer Socorro Rojas and Human Resource and Management Officer Dr. Jane Bascar.

The SPES program is a partnership between the LGU and the DOLE under a 60-40 percent sharing agreement, covers a working period of 20 days with assignments in the barangays and selected offices.

Each beneficiary will receive a salary of P280 per day or a total of P5,600 for the 20-day work period. The city government has allocated some P9 million for the SPES program. — Sheila Covarrubias
