Thirty two dance groups went on stage Wednesday afternoon, May 13, at the Paseo del Mar grounds to showcase their moves and creative flair for the Zamboanga Hip Hop Dance Competition.

Spearheaded by the City Government of Zamboanga as one of the line-up of activities for the 2015 Summer Festival, the competition gathered the best Zamboangueño dance crews who went head to head in four competition categories – the Junior, Varsity, Crew, and the Mega-Crew categories.

Mayor Beng Climaco graced the afternoon event as she formally opened the dance competition.

The Junior category featured dance crews with members ages 7 – 12 years old, while the Varsity category gathered official varsity dance groups representing the different schools in Zamboanga City. The Crew and Mega-Crew category, on the other hand, showcased dance groups with 5 – 12 members and 15 – 40 members, respectively.

Aside from the performances of the 32-strong dance groups, another highlight of the activity were the world-class live performances of dance groups Sexy Bordz and Universal Cover Group.

Performances were judged according to choreography (35%), artistry/style (35%), technique/difficulty (20%), and costume (10%). All major winners received cash prizes.

Meanwhile, more summer activities are expected to bring fun and excitement to the City as it continues to celebrate the 2015 Summer Festival. Still to come are the Juego de Antes (May 16), the Dia de General Vicente Alvarez (May 18), the Festival delas Bellas y Flores (May 22), the Danza Verano: Party Until Sundown (May 23), and the Peace and Freedom Run – Zamboanga (May 24). — Jasmine Mohammadsali
