Univet Nutrition and Animal Healthcare Company (UNAHCO) expressed full support to the government’s thrust of ensuring food safety and security, vowing to mobilize all available resources to educate and reach as many hog raisers and feed dealers as possible through a nationwide information drive about the importance of food safety through the use of safe feeds.

Speaking during the recent launching of the Department of Agriculture’s (DA’s) National Swine Nutrition Month in Quezon City, UNAHCO President and COO Ricardo C. Alba said the company owes it to the Filipino people to provide not only high quality feed products but to help spread crucial information about the link between food safety and safe feeds.

“We shall be the government’s ready and willing partner in this endeavor because not only is there a law on food safety, but because we have made it our humble mission to help uplift the animal industry and the quality of life,” Alba said during the press conference that launched the first-ever National Swine Nutrition Month.

Alba said that, as the animal healthcare and nutrition division of industry leader Unilab, UNAHCO has always been one with the government in the pursuit to ensure food safety and security for the country’s growing population which is now estimated at more than 100 million.

“Unilab’s main concern is the health of the people, that is why we are also true to its values by making sure that every ingredient included in our feeds is safe and of high quality,” he added.

Other resource persons present during the launch of the National Swine Nutrition Month include DA Undersecretary Jose C. Reaño, Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) Director Rubina Cresencio, National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) Executive Director Minda S. Manantan, and International Training Center on Pig Husbandry (ATI-ITCPH) Center Director Ruth Sonaco.

They all expressed appreciation for UNAHCO’s active role in promoting food safety and security through the company’s swine feeds business unit, Pigrolac.

The speakers discussed, among others, the importance of using high quality and high-nutrient feeds to ensure the production of safe meat in accordance with the National Swine Nutrition Month’s theme, “Quality and Safety, from Feed to Meat”.

The speakers likewise stressed the need to source feeds from reputable sources, as some of them noted that some unscrupulous local feed millers use feed additives that may affect human health once consumed through the animals fed with such substances.

UNAHCO Marketing Director Clint B. Escondo said that to bring the message of food safety down to the grassroots level, the company will mobilize its field sales personnel and technicians to conduct a series of seminars and nutrivet missions all over the Philippines beginning this month to educate small-hold hog raisers on the issue. — Nonoy E Lacson
