Brigada Eskwela, a school cleanup program to prepare for the coming school year will kick off today, May 18 at the Masepla Transitory Site in barangay Mampang.

Spearheaded by the Department of Education (DepEd), Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) and UNICEF, Brigada Eskwela 2015 in Zamboanga cites highlights the effort to ensure efficient and effective education to children of all abilities regardless of age, religion, race or economic status.

Masepla TS, currently the biggest transitory site in the Zamboanga Response, is equipped with 4 temporary learning centers operated by the UNICEF in partnership with WMSU, under the so-called composite school system. The centers were initiated and funded by various partners to include the IRDT, Silsillah Learning Center and the IOM among others.

The Brigada Eskwela opening program will be preceded by a motorcade from the DEPED- City Office in Baliwasan to the Masepla TS in Mampang at 6:30am. Mayor Beng Climaco (to be represented by Assistant City Administrator Elmeir Apolinario), DEPED Region 9 Director Malcolm Garma as well as City Schools Division Superintendent Pedro Melchor Natividad are expected to grace the activity.

Students and parents at the Masepla Transitory Site are expected to give testimonies a well as to make a pledge of commitment to support and avail of education services in the coming school year. In the afternoon, the children will have a fringe play or recital based on what they learned the past month from the theater workshops.

Brigada Eskwela is a nationwide voluntary activity which brings together teachers, parents and the community to do clean up and repairs in public schools to prepare the facilities for school opening (1 June 2015). It is undertaken for one week and is done two weeks before the start of classes.

The theme for this years Brigada Eskwela is “Tayo para sa Kalinisan, Kaligtasan at Kagandahan ng ating mga Paaralan”. — Sheila Covarrubias
