In recognition of the valuable contribution of small and medium enterprises (SME) to national economic development, the government through the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) officially starts its search for the country’s outstanding entrepreneurs.

The SME STAR Program forms part of the administration’s drive to strengthen and support micro, small and medium enterprises.
Regional Director Nazrullah Manzur said that the 2011 SME STAR Program is seen as an important component in SME development and promotion, as it recognizes outstanding entrepreneurs who have shown remarkable achievements in growing their businesses to become competitive enterprises.

According to Manzur, the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) account for 99.6% of all the businesses registered in the country and provide gainful employment to millions of Filipinos.

He said that under the SME STAR Program, three award levels or categories are included in the search. These levels correspond to the stages in enterprise growth, such as:

(1) SME Rising Star – for enterprises in the start-up and capability-building stage. This, he said,  is conducted and awarded at the provincial level;
(2) SME Elite Star – for enterprises at the domestic market penetration and export awareness stage and is awarded at the regional level; and,
(3) SME Presidential Star – for highly successful enterprises that have reached the export and expansion stage, which is awarded at the national level.

According to Manzur, the provincial search has just been concluded and the named winners under the Rising Star category were as follows: For Zamboanga del Sur: 22 Greenhouse Fishing Station and Restaurant, Puting Manok Corporation, and Danlugan Multi-Purpose Cooperative, while its nominee for the Elite Star Award was Djaboy’s Fashion Craft.

For Zamboanga del Norte, the Rising Star awardees were: Marapong Corporation and Alenter Food Products, while its Elite Star nominee was Tita Rosa Food Products, Incorporated.

Zamboanga Sibugay’s Rising Star awardees were: Rockwood Sash and Furnishing, and Tambanan Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Cooperative. Its Elite Star nominee was the Philippine Pioneer Rubber Products Corporation.

The regional winner under the SME Elite Star category will be known this Friday, June 17 after the deliberation by the panel of evaluators, Manzur said.
“As to the SME Presidential Star Award category, we shall have no entry as yet as this category will still be formally launched during the SME Summit in July 7, 2011” Manzur added. — LSV/DTI9/PIA9
