Mayor Beng Climaco yesterday conveyed her thanks and gratitude to the United States Assistance for International Development (USAID) for being one of the city’s consistent partners for the development of Zamboanga through various projects, programs and activities.

“We thank the USAID for the opportunity of development and for choosing to help develop Zamboanga City. Whatever form of government, whatever form of autonomy our neighbors will have, let us make Zamboanga a welcoming city and a staging ground for development in the region,” Mayor Climaco said during the Regional USAID Implementing Partners’ Meeting for Zamboanga, Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi at Garden Orchid Hotel yesterday morning.

Climaco, however, said Zamboanga being a developing city is willing to learn from other cities and provinces in the country that have advanced in terms of best practices and other development programs, citing for instance the lessons to learn from Lipa City, Batangas.

While Zamboanga City is advancing and leading the region towards development, the chief executive said her heart goes out to the neighboring provinces of Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.

“They are our very dear neighbors and I hope development reaches them as well and in whatever capacity Zamboanga City can provide to help them develop as well,” Climaco said.

Recall, the USAID has in recent years been implementing various infrastructure projects and development programs in the city, and the assistance has dramatically doubled since after the Zamboanga siege in September 2013 to the present. — Vic Larato
