Undersecretary Alexander Pama of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) will grace a workshop on contingency planning set to be conducted in the City next month.

Assistant City Administrator and City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) head Dr. Elmeir Apolinario said the three-day workshop set from June 9 – 11 will focus on contingency planning for worst-case scenarios, with particular emphasis on human-induced violence.

This, said Apolinario, is to ensure that the City is better prepared to cope with emergencies and man-made disasters such as the armed siege of September 2013 in the City.

“If anything will happen again, we will be better prepared, we will be able to cope,” said Apolinario.

The planned workshop is also a part of the CDRRMO’s mandate on disaster preparedness, he added.

The workshop will convene key stakeholders and major sectors in safety and security, to include police and military forces, the utilities sector, and local and national government agencies.

Also expected to be present are heads and representatives of all 98 barangays in the City whose involvement as front-liners are considered critical in the contingency planning.

“The 98 barangays will be involved in this undertaking,” clarified Apolinario. “We really want that when we put that contingency planning in place, it will practically address all the issues, hinde lang el de guerra, but also including fire, epidemics, and other disasters.” — Jasmine Mohammadsali
