The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration-Regional Welfare Office – IX  (OWWA-RWO-IX) will celebrate “Migrant Workers Day” on June 7, 2015 (Sunday), in recognition of the valuable contributions of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) to the country’s economy.

The celebration will be held  at Royce Convention Center of Grand Astoria hotel.

OWWA Regional Director Hassan Gabra Jumdain said he expects the occasion to  surpass their 600 target participants as their keynote speaker will be Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) Chief Operating Officer Mark Lapid together with Senator Lito Lapid and Mayor Beng Climaco-Salazar.

This year’s theme is “Kasanayan at Husay sa Paggawa, Proteksyon ng Migranteng Manggagawa,” as a way of celebrating the 20th year of the signing into law Republic Act 8042 otherwise known as the Migrant Workers Act of 1995.

Jumdain said this law promotes overseas employment as a policy while it keeps the government responsible for the protection of OFWs.

“The occasion is being celebrated in honor of the millions of Filipinos working abroad to alleviate poverty,” Jumdain said.

The occasion will start with a registration of participants from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. followed by doxology, singing of national anthem and Zamboanga Hermosa.

OFW Regional Federation President Ladjakaya Abubakar will give his welcome remarks which will be followed by the messages of Mayor Beng Climaco-Salazar and Senator Lito Lapid.

Jumdain will lead the introduction of the keynote speaker which will be followed by the message of TIEZA Chief Operating Officer Mark Lapid and presentation of awards while DOLE Regional Director Sisinio Cano will make the closing remarks. Parlor games and raffle draws will cap the celebration.

Meanwhile, OFW Federation and OWWA personnel will hold their final meeting on June 5, 2015 (Friday) at 2 o’clock in the afternoon at the Grand Astoria hotel. — Monch L. Follosco
