A militiaman was beheaded, while his companion was wounded when gunmen attacked them while they were patrolling the vicinity of their outpost early Saturday morning in the outskirts of Maluso town, Basilan.

A police report said the two militia volunteers were patrolling the vicinity of their outpost in Mabolo townsite when some 20 suspected Abu Sayyaf gunmen attacked them around 5:40. CAFGU Daning Lumayon was shot and beheaded, while his colleague Kila Lumayon was wounded.

Police said the attackers took Daning’s M-16 rifle and ammuniton bandolier before moving out of the area. Ten minutes later, army special forces commandos and militiamen clashed with the same group. Two of the attackers were reported wounded in the five-minute gunbattle.

Pursuit operation was ongoing as of noontime in the hinterland of Mahayahay village, where the armed group retreated. Another team of special forces commandos put up a blocking force in the area.

The clash triggered an evacuation of some 20 families in Upper Mahayahay, according to Maluso officials said. They were given temporary shelter in the town center of Maluso.

It was gathered that the two militiamen were among several militia-soldier teams dispatched in different areas to guard the water pipes of the Maluso water district as suspected Abu Sayyaf saboteurs blew up some main water pipes in Maluso, cutting the town’s water supply.
