Zamboanga City will join the nation in the commemoration of the 150th birth anniversary of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal on Sunday, June 19 with the theme “Rizalism: the Pillar of the Filipino Nation”.

Jointly organized by the city government and the Order of the Knights of Rizal-ZC chapter, the event will kick off with a flag raising ceremony at 8am at the Plaza Rizal fronting City Hall on Sunday. A floral offering and a brief commemorative program will follow.

Mayor Celso Lobregat and the Knights of Rizal officials will lead in the hoisting of the Philippine flag during the flag raising ceremony. The mayor will likewise give an inspirational message during the program.

Domingo Falcasantos, Knights of Rizal Area Commander for Western Mindanao will give the opening remarks while Fidel Milan, chapter commander in Zamboanga will close the program. The ZCHS-main choir will lead in the prayer and the singing of the national anthem.

Rizal’s birth anniversary came a week after the country observed the 113th Independence Day, June 12 with austere but meaningful ceremonies.
Rizal was born on June 19, 1861 in Calamba, Laguna. His parents were Don Francisco Engracio Rizal (1818–1898) and Doña Teodora Morales Alonso Realonda (1826–1911).    The national government has prepared a week-long celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of the national hero which began Monday, June 13 with activities in private and public schools as well as in communities in various parts of the country.

The Department of Tourism (DoT) has organized “Lakbay Jose Rizal @ 150,” a year-long tour that allows tourists to retrace the national hero’s steps by visiting as many as 27 Rizal sites in the country. Dapitan City where Rizal was exiled was one of the sites visited by tourists including members of the national media and participants of Lakbay Rizal at 150. — Sheila Covarrubias
