The City Government has set five events, mostly celebrating history of the nation and Zamboanga City.

On June 12, Zamboanga City will join the nation in the observance of the 117th anniversary of Philippine Independence. The local activity will kick off with a flag raising ceremony at the Plaza Rizal in front of City Hall at 8am.

Dr. Jose Rizal’s 153rd birth anniversary will be a simple but significant event on June 19 which will also start with a flag raising ceremony at 8am at the Plaza Rizal.

Dia de Fundacion Chabacano, which marks the day when the chabacano dialect was first spoken in Zamboanga will be on June 23 at 8am at the Plaza Rizal. The observance  is mandated by City Ordinance 374 which enjoins all organizations, entities and residents to preserve and promote the usage of Chabacano. The Chabacano language traces its roots back to the laying of the cornerstone of the Fuerza de San Jose (now Fort Pilar) on June 23, 1635.

In line with the Dia de Fundacion de Chabacano, there will be a chabacano debate exhibition at 1pm in City Hall with participants coming from various schools. A battle of the bands featuring chabacano songs will also be held on June 23 at Paseo del Mar.

Also in line with the City’s efforts to conserve and preserve the chabacano language, the city government is also organizing the Cine Chabacano, a film and animation festival from June 23-28 with free public screening at the Cinematheque Zamboanga. Screening time will be 10am, 12noon, 2pm and 4pm.

On June 25, the City Government through the City Environment and Natural Resources Office will spearhead the city-wide celebration of “Arbor Day na Ciudad de Zamboanga” which mars the start of the planting season based on a local ordinance.

Mayor Beng Climaco enjoins all sectors and agencies- both government and private groups to participate in the tree planting activity that will be done in the city’s designated planting site at the Cesar C. Climaco Freedom Park in Abong-abong Pasonanca.
