To better prepare the city in times of man-made disasters, a three-day workshop on contingency planning kicks off today, June 9 at the Royce Convention Center in Astoria Hotel.

Organized by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), the workshop will be keynoted by Undersecretary Alexander Pama of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). Social Welfare Assistant Secretary Vilma Cabrera is also expected to grace the event.

Mayor Beng Climaco expressed full support to the contingency planning citing its relevance to present challenges besetting Zamboanga City in the wake of the 2013 Zamboanga siege.

Assistant City Administrator and CDRRMO head Dr. Elmeir Apolinario said the three-day workshop set from June 9 – 11 will focus on contingency planning for worst-case scenarios, with particular emphasis on human-induced violence.

This, said Apolinario, is to ensure that the City is better prepared to cope with emergencies and man-made disasters such as the armed siege of September 2013 in the City.

“If anything will happen again, we will be better prepared, we will be able to cope,” said Apolinario.

The planned workshop is also a part of the CDRRMO’s mandate on disaster preparedness, he added.

The workshop will convene key stakeholders and major sectors in safety and security, to include police and military forces, the utilities sector, and local and national government agencies.

Also expected to be present are heads and representatives of all 98 barangays in the City whose involvement as front-liners are considered critical in the contingency planning. — Sheila Covarrubias
