District 1 Congressman Celso Lobregat, leader of the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino (LDP), Zamboanga City Chapter, yesterday convened the party’s members in his residence in what appeared as a show of force leading to the 2016 elections.

The surprised gathering has strengthened speculations that the political alliance of Rep. Lobregat and Mayor Beng Climaco, leader of the local chapter of the Liberal Party, is heading for a breakup, with Lobregat almost certain to make a comeback for the mayoralty post, which if happened, will be tough election contest in the forthcoming election.

Both Lobregat and Climaco, however, said they are still “consulting the people” on what their political plans for the next election.

Dressed in their signature color red, Lobregat and most of the LDP members posed for pictures before newsmen and later proceeded to a meeting to discuss their political plans for the 2016 pollls.

In high spirit and with strong confidence, the party members exchanged ideas and updates with Lobregat who is urged them to stand united and not divided with their party affiliation and objectives of pursuing political and developmental agenda for the city.

“I believe, and as you can see for yourself, we are intact and growing strong, we are still the formidable local political party to reckon with in the forthcoming elections,” Lobregat said.

The solon also revealed that their party is also open to the idea of political alliance with other parties as well as local leaders and candidates who wish to serve the city, as long as the entirety of the party members agree to it in unison.

In previous elections, LDP has coalesced  with other political parties like Adelante Zamboanga, Liberal Party and Nacionalista Party.

“We are strengthening the party, we will proceed as we always do with passion and vigor and we will do what has to be done. We are also welcoming ‘like-minds’,” Lobregat said.

The local chapter of the LDP was put up the late mayor Maria Clara Lobregat in the ealy 90s when then Senator Ramon Mitra was spearheading the party as the national chairman.

Since then, the local LDP became the leading political party that dominated several elections. It maintains contract of unity and continuity for the people, for good governance and pursue progress and development of the city.

Lobregat said every every member of LDP keeps an open mind with regards to their political positioning as they will be venturing on changes and slight movements.

Newsmen covering yesterday’s the LDP gathering got another surprise when Lobregat sworn in two additional members — Maasin Barangay Chairman Misael Bernardo and Indigenous Peoples Council Representative Ismael Musa.

In attendance during the meeting were incumbent Vice-Mayor Cesar Iturralde, Councilors Mike Alavar, BG Guingona, VP Elago, Percival Ramos, Luis Biel III, Charlie Mariano and former councilor Rudy Lim. Other LDP members absent for personal reasons were Myra Paz Abubakar, Rey Candido and Eddie Saavedra. – Bhong Simbajon/RMN News
