Councilor Joanna Mari Mas, the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) president, is calling the cross section of the society, to conduct tree planting activities on June 25 “to make the observance of Arbor Day a meaningful one” in this city.

Mas made her call through a resolution she sponsored in last Wednesday regular session of the City Council. It was unanimously approved by the august body.
Mas said she came up with the resolution to make the observance of Arbor Day a meaningful celebration.

Arbor Day is being celebrated every 25th day of June to raise public awareness on the importance of trees to the environment.
Mas said the tree planting should include the planting of mangrove trees in coastal barangays.

“Mangroves are very vital to our marine ecosystem,  these being the habitat and breeding grounds of many kinds of marine creatures,” Mas explained.
“Even just for one day, let us do a little bit for the environment that has nurtured mankind since he came to being,” Mas added.
By doing so, she said, the Zamboangueños could help mitigate the effects of climate change.
