City caretaker and Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde on Friday, June 19, led Zamboangueños in the commemoration of the 154th birth anniversary of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal, as he expressed hopes that residents “will find the Rizal in us as we fight for our own battles as a country and people.”

Despite the inclement weather, the commemoration proceeded as scheduled with hundreds of people representing different sectors attending the ceremonies that kicked off with the flag raising ceremony and the wreath laying rite at the Rizal Park in front of City Hall. The brief program was held at the City Hall lobby.

“As we celebrate Jose Rizal’s birth anniversary today, may we be reminded of how much he has done and the price he paid to help us gain our freedom. Moreover, I hope that we will find the Rizal in us as we fight our own battles as a country and people,” the city caretaker said stressing that the fight for a better Philippines continues in present times.

While the country is no longer under the rule of foreign powers, Iturralde said the nation is still confronted with corruption as well as threats from both external and internal sources. “We all dream of a much better Philippines for all of us. We all want peace and progress. We want to eradicate poverty. We want for things to improve, to be different from what it is today.”

However, he stressed, for change to happen, Filipinos must be willing to change themselves. “We need to be the change we want to see in this country. Let us be that change that will inspire others and endeavor to always do the right thing no matter how difficult that can mean. We must learn from our mistakes and refrain from repeatedly making the wrong choices. We must change for things to be different. Stop looking for heroes elsewhere and instead be the heroes ourselves.”

Themed “Rizalism: Emergence of national  peace and good governance,” the 154th birth anniversary of Dr. Jose Jose Rizal was organized jointly by the City Government and the Order of the Knights of Rizal –Zamboanga City Chapter headed by Domingo Falcasantos.

Top officials who joined the celebration were Councilors Luis Biel III, VP Elago, Rodolfo Bayot and Melchor Sadain, Naval Forces Western Mindanao Commandant Rear Admiral Reynaldo Yoma, Police Regional Deputy Director PCSupt. Ramon Ochotorena, City Police Director PSSupt.
