The city government has set today, May 22, an elaborate ceremony befitting heroes to welcome the 7 Zamboangueno athletes who hauled medals in the recently concluded 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games held in Singapore June 5-16.

The ceremony is slated at 8am today during the flag raising ceremony where Mayor Beng Climaco will lead City Government officials and employees in feting the athletes for bringing pride and honor not only to Zamboanga but to the entire country.

Of the total 7 medal haulers, 6 are gold medalists that include billiards player Chezka Centeno, boxer Eumir Felix Marcial and softball players Sonny Boy Acuna, Orlando Binarao, Emerson Atilano and Vermon Diaz.  Alshamier Ibnohasim is a bronze medalist for his performance in Pencak silat.

The ceremony, spearheaded by the Sports Development Division under the Office of the City Mayor will be followed by a motorcade around the city’s major thoroughfares.

Mayor Climaco will also present to the athletes the ceremonial check representing the incentives due them based on City Ordinance 231. Under the said law, gold medalists will receive P150,000; silver medalists get P100,000 and bronze medalists are entitled to P75,000 cash incentives.

Expected to attend during the heroes’ welcome today are Centeno and Ibnohasim and the parents and relatives of Marcial and the four softball players, who cannot make it due to the tight schedule in Manila where they are based. — Sheila Covarrubias
