The City Government, through the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources (OCENR) will spearhead a massive tree planting initiative in line with the nationwide observance of Arbor Day celebration on Thursday, June 25.

Mayor Beng Climaco will lead the City in the tree planting activity to be held at Upper Pasonanca as well as the tagging of century and heritage trees.

An opening program at 7 AM at the Climaco Freedom Park in Abong-Abong will officially kick-off the Arbor Day celebrations.

The Arbor Day celebration is held every year pursuant to Ordinance 281 which declares June 25 as Arbor Day na Ciudad de Zamboanga.

Each year, at least 7,000 participants from different sectors join the tree planting activity to preserve and protect the City’s natural resources.

Aside from the tree planting effort, the Arbor Day celebration will also observe the tagging of nine century trees and three heritage trees in different areas in the City.

This is pursuant to Ordinance 431, otherwise known as the Century and Heritage Tree Ordinance.

Century trees are trees identified to have lived for more than 100 years.

On the other hand, heritage trees are important trees which have not yet reached 100 years old but are ecologically, historically, or culturally valuable, or belonging to a rare specie, or adjacent or near a water source. — Jasmine Mohammadsali
