Classes in basic education that includes kindergarten, elementary and secondary levels, both private and public, remained suspended Wednesday, July 1, due to the prevailing weather situation.

However, suspension of classes in higher education remained at the discretion of the school officials.

Mayor Beng Climaco ordered the continuation of the suspension of classes as early as 5:30am, July 1, based on the recommendation of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) head Dr. Elmeir Apolinario and in coordination with the PAG-ASA.

On June 30, the mayor ordered the cancellation of classes in the basic education levels effective in the afternoon, as the city continuously experience stormy weather condition. The cancellation was pursuant to Executive Order 66 of President Aquino on localized cancellation and suspension of classes and work in government offices and also based on recommendation of the CDRRMO and in coordination with the PAG-ASA.

Per advisory from the Civil Defense Office, the Low Pressure Area (LPA) as of 4am Wednesday was estimated based on all available data at 555 km East of Eastern Samar. It is embedded along the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) across Visayas. Cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and thunderstorms will prevail over MIMAROPA, Visayas and Mindanao.

Mayor Climaco renews her call for people to remain vigilant and wary in light of the unstable weather condition. Precautionary measures should be taken to prevent the loss of lives and properties.

She likewise urged barangay officials anew to continuously monitor situation in their areas of responsibility and to act as ground commander in cases of emergencies to ensure zero casualties.

Meanwhile, CDRRMO head Apolinario said his office is on standby 24-hours a day to respond to calls for emergency specifically weather-related incidences. — Sheila Covarrubias
