A man died, while three other minors were wounded as strong winds and big waves hit the province of Basilan.

Basilan Assistant Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Officer Jamju Rivera, told ABS-CBN  a certain Kahal Mahamud died last Thursday after he was swept away by big waves which hit their house at a coastal village in the municipality of Hadji Mutamad.

Mahamud’s house was totally damaged, together with 56 other shanties located along the shoreline.

Rivera said there were almost 200 houses damaged in Basilan, the bulk of which were in Maluso municipality, where around 73 houses were destroyed.

There were also some houses affected in Isabela City and Lantawan municipality.

Basilan provincial administrator Tahira Ismael said three minors were hurt in a village in Lantawan after a coconut tree toppled and hit a small house, also on Thursday.

Tahira said the continuous rains coupled with strong winds affected most of the municipalities of Basilan, especially those in coastal areas.

There were also three fishermen who were reported missing in Hadji Mutamad municipality, but Tahira said the three have been able to seek shelter in Barangay Cawit in Zamboanga City, amid rough seas and strong winds.

In Isabela City, the local government has advised residents living in coastal areas to evacuate and seek safer grounds, as they continue to experience inclement weather condition.

Tahira said they continue to assess the extent of damage in the different municipalities and cities in Basilan, as they prepare to extend assistance to those affected families.

Aside from the relief goods, the provincial government is also planning to give construction materials to the affected families, to help them re-build their destroyed houses.

As of Sunday, commercial vessels plying the route of Zamboanga City to Basilan have been allowed to travel.

Smaller sea vessels, however, have been advised not to set sail.
