The city government of Zamboanga through the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office joins the celebration this July of the National Disaster Consciousness Month with the theme “Ligtas na Bayan, Maunlad na Pamayanan.”

CDRRMO chief Dr. Elmeir Apolinario said one of the activities for the month-long celebration is the bloodletting activity on July 10 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the CDRRMO complex Zone 4.

The newly created office will also conduct series of information campaigns on disaster risk management in different schools in a bid to inform students on the climate hazards and the measures to take to reduce their impact on the lives and properties of people.

On July 30, there will be an earthquake drill in designated areas to be announced later.

This year’s theme highlights the country’s goal of the disaster risk reduction and management advocacy that is: safeguarding of communities from the adverse effects of disasters to promote sustainable development.

The essence of the month-long observance, pursuant to an executive order issued by former President Joseph Estrada in 1998 is to promote public awareness on natural hazards and disseminate information on the steps to be undertaken to mitigate the adverse effects of such hazards.

The Kick-Off activity shall begin with flag raising ceremonies of all the NDRRMC agencies, local government units and partner-institutions that would be done simultaneously all over the archipelago and will be followed by parallel activities scheduled within the month of July. — Vic Larato
