The city government is sure to clearing the Joaquin F. Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex of siege internally displaced persons by middle of this month as relocation sites have already been prepared.

City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Officer Elmeir Apolinarion announced during the press briefing in City Hall yesterday that the closedown of the grandstand or the sports complex will definitely pushed through on July 16.

Apolinario said the earlier deadline of June 30 had to be called off considering that most of the IDPs at the grandstand, numbering around 400 families, resisted to their relocation site due to the absence of water and light connections.

“We told them that utility services like water and electricity can only be connected to the temporary shelters (at Masepla in Mampang) once there are already occupants. Otherwise, the materials will again be stolen as in the past,” Apolinario said.

He said the IDPs will most likely celebrate Hariraya Puasa or end of Ramadan on July 18 or 19 at their relocation shelters and not anymore at the grandstand.

For his part, city police director Sr. Supt. Angelito Casimiro said the police and military forces have heightened security measures in all transitory sites, especially those in shorelines and mangrove areas which could well be used as entry points of lawless elements.

He said social preparations have been conducted on the IDPs in the different transitory sites, particularly at Masepla, which is facing Basilan, for them to understand the hardened security without resistance.— Vic Larato
