In the light of the continuing threats from lawless elements, Mayor Beng Climaco reiterates her call for residents of the city to remain vigilant and supportive of peace keeping efforts.

“We need to remain alert and vigilant of what’s happening around us,” the mayor said in a recent interview. “Immediately report to authorities about suspicious bags or items left in your area and even the presence of  suspicious persons and activities including abandoned vehicles in your vicinity.”

A week ago, police and military authorities uncovered plans of lawless elements to sow atrocities in the city this month specifically during turnover of housing units to internally displaced persons. These pieces of information were unearthed as the authorities also raided improvised explosive devices in two areas in the city and the consequent apprehension of a suspected terrorist in Basilan.

“We commend the intelligence community composed of  the Air Force, Navy, Police, Army and all that have responded in the apprehension of suspects and the detection of the IEDs,” she said.

These achievements have prevented further atrocities in the city, she stressed.

But while the authorities are exerting best efforts to safeguard the people, the mayor said  it is the responsibility of the residents to contribute in peace-keeping efforts. “The  police and military and the local government unit cannot do it alone but we need the support and cooperation of all sectors.”

She added that the local government will continuously support the security sector for the best interest and welfare of the residents. — Sheila Covarrubias
